Diet, exercise could cut cancer rates by third:
"PARIS (AFP) – A third of common cancers could be prevented if people shifted to a sounder diet, exercised more and controlled their weight, researchers said on Thursday.
The report, by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research, analysed incidence of 12 types of cancer in the United States, Britain, Brazil and China.
Around a third of these cancers could be prevented by better nutrition, physical activity and obesity controls, it estimated.
The figure does not include the benefits of tackling cancer by stopping smoking. Tobacco use alone accounts for about a third of cancers."

Cancer Fighting Beer?

Now this unusual, and innovative.
Have you ever picked up a cold, frosty beer on a hot summer's day and thought that it simply couldn't get any better?
Well, you may have to think again.
A team of researchers at Rice University in Houston is working to create a beer that could fight cancer and heart disease. Taylor Stevenson, a member of the six-student research team and a junior at Rice, said the team is using genetic engineering to create a beer that includes resveratrol, the disease-fighting chemical that's been found in red wine.
Scientists at the University of Wisconsin in June had called resveratrol, which is a natural component of grapes, pomegranates and red wine, a key reason for the so-called French Paradox, the observation that French people have lower rates of heart disease despite a cuisine known for its cream sauces and decadent cheeses, all loaded with heart-clogging saturated fats.

Cheers to red wine, this time for cancer
Walt mentioned this is his comment on the last entry, so here's more on resveratrol.
Cheers to red wine, this time for cancer
Seema Singh
Time, once again, to celebrate that wonder molecule in red wine called resveratrol. New research in today's issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention shows that moderate consumption of red wine may decrease the risk of lung cancer in men, particularly among smokers.
Lead author Chun Chao analyzed data collected through the California Men's Health Study from 84,170 men aged 45 to 69 years. Researchers measured the effect of beer, red wine, white wine and liquor consumption on the risk of lung cancer.
After making adjustments for age, race/ethnicity, education, income, body mass index, history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or emphysema, and smoking history, researchers reported a 60 % reduced lung cancer risk in these men.

Alkalizing Foods
I have read that an acid body is a magnet for sickness, disease, cancer and aging.
Of course the FDA says that's all bunk, but when I first read about this, I mentioned it to a Chemo nurse. We talked about the foods a bit and as she was leaving the room she said and I quote" Cancer can't live in an alkaline body."
That was a chemo nurse that deals with cancer and cancer treatment on a daily basis.
In case your interested here's partial list of alkaline foods. Of course you can find complete lists online, but just look how many foods listed here are what we now know ( Or at least doctors are now admitting) are actual aids in fighting cancer.

FTC Wants Bogus Cancer Cures out of the Internet
FTC Wants Bogus Cancer Cures out of the Internet
People who suffer from cancer should forget about the miraculous cures promised on hundreds of Internet pages or should inform authorities about companies selling them. At least, this is the latest message of the Federal Trade Commission which is desperately trying to make people more aware of the fact that there is no scientific evidence that these cures actually work. And still there are millions of people who put their trust in them hoping for a miracle not even knowing that these cures might have side effects that might interfere with the drugs already prescribed.

Mamaherb a new wiki alternative medicine site
Mamaherb a new wiki alternative medicine site:
"A new Web site devised by Israeli high-tech executives hopes to answer that question by providing information on thousands of health problems and possible natural remedies.
Although there are several databases of natural remedies available online, the creators of Mamaherb say their Web site ( www.mamaherb.com) is the only resource for information provided by and updated by users. The Web site, which was begun in January, already has 8,450 treatments listed for 512 existing conditions.
Mamaherb.com is the brainchild of Tamir Goren, 46, Elad Daniel, 33 and Orni Daniel, 31. None are health care professionals. Goren came up with the idea of tapping into the experience of millions of Internet users after his 74-year-old mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and experienced severe side effects from chemotherapy."

Man convicted over cancer 'cure'
Man convicted over cancer 'cure'
A Manchester man has been convicted of advertising a "natural cure" for cancer on the internet.
Andrew Harris, 49, of Sale, advertised "Triamazon" on two websites as a natural alternative for treating all types of cancer.
He was convicted under the Cancer Act of 1939 of taking part in the publication of adverts offering to treat people for cancer.
He was given a two-year conditional discharge by Trafford magistrates.
The 1939 act made it illegal to offer a cure for cancer or to offer advice on how to treat it in any advertisement outside the medical profession.

How powerful is the simple blackberry in battling cancer?

How powerful is the simple blackberry in battling cancer? To find out, Mumper introduced blackberry extract into colonies of colon cancer cells in vitro. “Under normal conditions, these cells grow at a steady rate, doubling almost every day,” Mumper explains. “So, the question we were asking was, can this blackberry extract inhibit the growth rate of these tumor cells?”

Blackberries are natural rich sources of bioflavonoids and phenolic compounds that are commonly known as potential chemopreventive agents.

Fresh blackberries were recently identified as one of nature’s top cancer fighters. Studies show blackberries have the highest antioxidant content per serving of any food tested and have important cancer fighting properties. Ample supplies of healthful blackberries are now in supermarkets and club stores during their spring peak, according to Sun Belle Inc., a leading berry marketer and distributor.

Strawberry
Researchers specializing in the health benefits of plant compounds have shown that quercetin, a phytonutrient found in abundance in strawberries and other fruits, can induce programmed self-destruction of human cancer cells.

Strawberries can lower the risk of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, says LSU AgCenter nutritionist Dr. Beth Reames.
"Strawberries are a nutritious, healthy treat, because they are rich in vitamin C," the LSU AgCenter nutritionist says, adding, "Such foods can lower cancer risk."

Cruciferous veg again linked to bladder cancer protection
Cruciferous veg again linked to bladder cancer protection:
"10-Apr-2008 - An increased intake of cruciferous vegetables may slash the risk of bladder cancer by 36 per cent, says new research that attributes the benefits to the isothiocyanate content."
Edible plants in the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) are termed Cruciferous vegetables. For a botanical description of plants in this family (whether or not used for food), see Brassicaceae. Ten of the most common vegetables eaten by people are in a single species (B. oleracea), and are not distinguished from one another taxonomically, but only by the horticultural category of cultivar groups. Numerous other genera and species in the family are also edible. Cruciferous vegetables are one of the dominant food crops worldwide. Widely considered to be healthful foods, they are high in vitamin C and soluble fibre and contain multiple nutrients with potent anti-cancer properties: diindolylmethane, sulforaphane and selenium.
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have recently discovered that 3,3'-Diindolylmethane in Brassica vegetables is a potent modulator of the innate immune response system with potent anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer activity.

Cancer Killer: Guava

Guava (from Arawak via Spanish guayaba), is a genus of about 100 species of tropical shrubs and small trees in the myrtle family Myrtaceae, native to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, Taiwan, and northern South America. In Urdu they are called amrood . In Sri Lanka they are called Pera. The Bengali name peyara and the Tagalog name bayabas are probably local renditions of guayaba. Numerous references in medical research identify guava as Psidium guajava.
They are typical Myrtoideae, with tough dark leaves that are opposite, simple, elliptic to ovate and 5-15 cm long. The flowers are white, with five petals and numerous stamens. The fruit are juicy. The guava makes an ideal houseplant as long as it remains moist. Spray the foliage to keep it healthy and pinch new growth to keep the plant bushy.
In several tropical regions, including Hawaii, some species (namely Cattley Guava, P. littorale) have become invasive weed shrubs. On the other hand, several species have become very rare and at least one (Jamaican Guava, P. dumetorum), is already extinct.
The genera Accara and Feijoa (Acca, Pineapple Guava) were formerly included herein too.
CURTAILS CANCER: Guava is a good source of lycopene. This carotenoid, which gives many plant foods their red or pink coloring
